In search of an RV Co-op, A
Six Year Odyssey Jack Yates
In 1984 a small group of RV'ers formed The Evergreen
Chapter of the Escapees. Little did they realize then, that out of this
group would emerge the leaders that would forge the teamwork to
ultimately complete the beautiful Evergreen COHO Resort. It wasn’t until March 1985, at the Escapade, that
the idea was born to build a co-op. The next three years were filled
with organizing, planning and searching. Committees were formed and
plans were made to elect officers, obtain additional members,
incorporate, search for land and start an escrow account for the members
investment. Over 15 properties were considered and countless
hours were spent during these preparatory years. Delays were not
uncommon. One parcel with a Sales Agreement ended up in court with a
promoter suing the seller. The Co-op was able to withdraw from this mess
and continued their search. Site plans would have to be changed. It wouldn’t be until the 14th of June
1988 that a purchase agreement would be signed for the Anderson Lake
property, the future home of the Evergreen Co-op Resort. With all the
committees in place and motivated, the arduous task of building the park
will finally begin. The next three years brought together various county
departments, contractors and volunteers. Good negotiating skills,
helpful contractors and persevering hard working volunteers that worked
through adverse conditions brought the Co-op to permanent legal
occupancy in 1991. In 2004 the name was changed to Evergreen COHO SKP
Park.
