Spider Man

By Bonnie Rupprecht

Al Gore may think he is the inventor of the Internet but in the small town of Williamstown, Vt. lives the creator of the first Web site!

Most of us think of spiders as yucky creatures with sticky webs to be disposed of as soon as they appear. Spiderman Will Knight thinks of them as living objects of beauty and creation.

By sheer accident one day over fifty years ago, Will was in his garage painting and spraying and by chance captured a spider webbing on his still tacky painting surface. He was overcome by the beauty and intricate work of the spider’s labor and has been studying and sharing spiders with the rest of the world ever since.

Will spends the harsh, isolating Vermont winters preparing wood for his plaques, cutting, planning, sanding and staining the pine to make a suitable base for the beautiful web. By May he is ready and the spiders are too. He has specially built frames in and around his Web Farm. As the spider completes his web, Will encourages it to "leave" so that he may harvest it. There are plenty of new WEB Sites in and around the garage for the spider to move and begin spinning again.

The harvesting and mounting of the web is what Will enjoys the most and he is happy to perform this for you upon your visit. You may purchase the web he harvests for you, or shop from the selection he has in his small shop. Will credits the spider as the creator and he just provides the "canvas" to highlight the art.

The plaques are wonderful wall art and make the one of a kind gift most of us are always looking for. The Web given to our young grandson hangs in his bedroom and has been taken to school on several occasions. Will also is a fine woodworker with lovely tables and lap desks for sale in his studio.

It is no wonder he has appeared on the TODAY SHOW, ALL THINGS CONSIDERED and in many publications. Will is as knowledgeable about spiders as any university professor and his sense of humor is as unique as his craft!

Legends say that spiders are good luck. It will be your lucky day if you wander off of I- 89 exit 5 to VT. Rt. 14 to Williamstown, Vt. and look for the signs for the Spider Web Farm on Spider Web Farm Road. Will and his wife Terry will be there tending the original WEB SITE and they have saved an original and unrepeatable work of art just for you!
